THE VESAK FESTIVAL

 

 

Vesak festival is the most important religious festival of the Buddhists. It falls in the month of May in every year. It is held to commemorate the birth, the enlightenment and the death of Lord Buddha. All those three great incidents have occurred on the same day which we call the “VESAK FULL MOON DAY” This is the happiest day for all the Buddhists.

People celebrate this day in different ways. Many people decorate their houses with festoons and beautiful vesak lanterns. The Buddhist flags could be seen flying in temples, houses and even in streets.

 

Temple are crowded with devotees all clad in white. Almost all go to temples for offering flowers to Lord Buddha and worshiping him. Those who have observed the eight precepts, spend the whole day in temples, sermons, meditation programs and many other meritorious activities are held at every temple. This grate is celebrated in similar way at all the Buddhist religious centers in other countries too.

Alms  giving ceremonies are mostly seen during these days. People conduct alms  giving centers called “DANSAL” day and night for the benefit of the    poor and the tired. At night the vesak full moon shines in the sky. Beautiful vesak lanterns glitter at every house hold, street are crowded with people, going to see pandols.

During these days all the slaughtering houses  throughout the country remains closed. No Destruction of life takes place any where in the country, on the Paya day. Some people
